NAIDU GETS COVETED 'Transformative CM Award'

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has been presented the 'Transformative Chief Minister Award' in the US for his efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries at the state level. The award by the US-India Business Council (USIBC) was presented yesterday to Naidu during the USIBC West Coast Summit in the Silicon Valley. The award acknowledges excellence in public service and recognise the honoree's achievement in championing US-India ties in the areas of trade, politics and culture, a USIBC press release said. Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT was also honoured with the same award for distinguished public service and her commitment to advancing US-India cooperation and Digital India. "With India's move towards a cashless society, plans to build smart cities and the explosive growth of e-commerce, it is imperative that there are deliberations on what the challenges are towards creating a digitally driven economy and how American companies can help in this endeavour. USIBC's annual West Coast Summit explored solutions to building an efficient digital infrastructure for India," Mukesh Aghi, USIBC President. "India's digitisation journey has opened the market to new growth opportunities and transformed the way Indian consumers access information and services. I believe that through collaborative efforts, the US-India technology partnership can only expand over the next few years and contribute to our growing bilateral trade," Aghi said. "We have strong partners in the Government of India. Leaders like Prime Minister Modi, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, and Secretary Sundararajan understand the urgency to bring about digital transformation of India. That is why Cisco and so many other American companies continue to bet big on India," USIBC Chairman and Cisco Executive Chairman John Chambers said. Last year's recipient for this award was Amitabh Kant, Chief Executive Officer of Niti Aayog. Naidu, on a week-long visit to the US, is accompanied by his 16-member team comprising Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, Government Advisor (Communications) Parakala Prabhakar and senior officials, will also visit Washington.

GOLD DEMAND SLUMPS AFTER TRUMP WIN

Global gold demand fell 18 per cent in the first quarter from a year earlier as US investors abandoned the precious metal after Donald Trump's election win, industry figures showed today. After a "really good" first quarter of 2016 for gold demand, the first three months of this year was "not a strong quarter", World Gold Council director John Mulligan told AFP. "In 2016 demand was concentrated on one source, which was professional investors, especially in the US" where activity was focussed on Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) - investment funds backed by physical stocks of gold, the WGC director added. Demand stood at 1,034.5 tonnes between January and March 2017, its lowest level in 11 years. At the same time last year, demand stood 1,261.8 tonnes. Cautious US investors rushed to the ETFs before the US presidential election, but are now shifting their attention to riskier products -- but it is a different story in Europe. "There are multiple elections coming up, even in Paris... the election is not over. People are uncertain, it is generally good for gold," said Mulligan. Gold is viewed as a haven investment in times of economic uncertainty. Despite enthusiasm from European investors, the demand for gold through ETFs dropped by 68 per cent to 109.1 tonnes in the first quarter. As well as in Europe, there was also an uptick in overall demand in India and China, the two leading buyers of physical gold. The demand for coins or bullion increased by 30 per cent in China to 105.9 tonnes. "The demand is seasonally strong in China, with the Chinese New Year, but it is only the fourth time demand was stronger than a 100 tonnes," said Mulligan. With Chinese authorities reforming the financial system to avoid a property bubble, savers have turned to physical gold to preserve their wealth. In India, demand for jewelry increased by 16 per cent to 92.3 tonnes, while the sector suffered at the end of 2016 from the government's demonetisation effort. "There are signs of improvement, especially from India where the gradual remonetisation of the economy is supporting the jewellery market," added Mulligan. Under India's monetisation programme, Indians are depositing their gold with banks for tax-free interest. Banks in turn are lending the metal to jewellers to help boost the local economy. Gold prices traded at USD 1,235.66 an ounce today, while the WGC said the metal was unlikely to see a return to last year's record high prices - at least until Trump unveils his tax plans.

INDIA ACHIEVE ANOTHER SUCCESS IN SPACE

In a first, India today successfully launched a South Asia Satellite to provide communications and disaster support to neighbouring countries, a space initiative described as a "giant and historic step" in boosting regional cooperation. Giving a fillip to India's new age space diplomacy and "neighbourhood first" policy, the Rs 235 crore satellite GSAT-9 built as part of a Rs 450 crore project and touted as an 'invaluable gift' to India's neighbours is seen as a significant move in countering Chinese interests in the region. The project is funded entirely by India. The cuboid-shaped 2,230 kg satellite named SAS will enable a full range of services to the neighbours, including in telecommunication, television, direct-to-home, VSATs, tele-education and telemedicine. The South Asian Satellite (SAS) mission life is 12 years. Seven of the eight SAARC countries--India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Maldives--are part of the ambitious project. Pakistan has opted out of the project, saying it has its own space programme. Soaring majestically in clear weather, the GSLV-F09 rocket blasted off around 4:57 PM from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, about 350 km from here, and injected the satellite into orbit in a flawless flight. "The launch of South Asian Satellite tells us that even the sky is not the limit when it comes to regional cooperation," Modi told the leaders of the seven nations celebrating the success of the launch during a video conference. Modi earlier took to Twitter to announce the successful launch of the south asian satellite, which is his brainchild, calling it a "historic moment." "It opens up new horizons of engagement. This will also greatly benefit South Asia & our region’s progress," he tweeted. Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena, Maldives President Abdulla Yameen and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani also addressed through videoconferencing. Lauding Modi's vision, the leaders hailed the mission as a giant step in strengthening regional cooperation. The launch took place away from the media glare, with  journalists kept at bay and a reticent ISRO keeping details of the mission and the programme under wraps. In Sriharikota, ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar said, "We have just transported South Asia satellite from Earth to geostationary transfer orbit using our geosynchronous launch vehicle mark II that makes use of indigenously developed cryogenic engine." He said the satellite operations and control will be carried out from ISRO's Master Control Facility at Hassan in Karnataka and that in the coming few weeks the satellite will reach its destination-geostationary orbit. GSLV-F09 mission is the 11th flight of GSLV, called a "naughty boy" as it has a patchy record with half of its mission ending in failures in the past. Built by the Indian Space Research Organisation, the SAS rode piggyback on the 50m-tall rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV-F09 with the indigenous Cryogenic powering the Upper Stage. GSLV-F09 mission is the 11th flight of GSLV. GSAT-9 is a Geostationary Communication Satellite providing various communication applications in Ku-band with coverage over south asian countries. It can also provide secure hotlines among the  participating nations, which will be useful for management of  disasters like earthquake, cyclone, floods and tsunami. Ghani described the launch as "South Asia's giant step towards regional cooperation" and said it makes the region's integration a reality. "Today marks the day where South Asia moves from speaking about desirability of regional integration to making it a reality. The gap between talk and action is bridged today." After coming to power in May 2014, Prime Minister Modi had asked ISRO scientists to develop a SAARC satellite that can be dedicated to neighbouring countries as a "gift from India. On his 'Mann ki baat' programme on Sunday last, Modi had announced that the South Asia Satellite would be India's "priceless gift" to its neighbouring countries. "On May 5, India will launch the South Asia Satellite. The benefits of this satellite will go a long way in meeting the developmental needs of the countries participating in this project," Modi had said. Extending his "Sabka saath, sabka vikaas" concept, SAS is part of Modi's 'Neighbourhood First' policy focusing on  India's South Asian neighbours. The previous launch of communication satellite GSAT-8 was on May 21, 2011 from Kourou, French Guiana. South Asia is considered prone to tropical cyclones, heat waves, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides and floods. The launch is considered significant as it is part of Space diplomacy to extend India's footprint over the region. It comes close on the heels of a record breaking launch of 104 mini satellites with a single rocket in February.

AP BANGANAPALLI GETS GI TAG

The succulent Banaganapalle mango has got Geographical Indication (GI) registration from the Geographical Indications Registry here today. The Registrar of Geographical Indications Registry, Chennai, O P Gupta accorded the registration following an application from Horticulture Commissioner, Andhra Pradesh. The Andhra Pradesh government is the registered proprietor of the GI tag for mangoes, often hailed as "the king of fruits." A GI tag indicates that the product comes from a specific region. Banganapalle mangoes are renowned for its sweetness and have been grown for over 100 years in the state. It also known as Beneshan, Baneshan, Benishan, Chappatai and Safeda. Besides, they are also called Banaganapalli, Banginapalli, Banaganapalle. The fruits could retain their quality under cold storage even up to three months, Andhra Pradesh government said in documents seeking GI. "The prominent characteristic of Banganapalle mangoes is that their skin has very light spots, stone is oblong in shape and having very thin seed with sparse and soft fibre all over," it said. The primary centre of origin of the fruit is Kurnool district comprising Banaganapalle, Paanyam and Nandyal mandals, according to Andhra Pradesh government which mentioned Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra as secondary centres of origin. The government has also listed Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy, Medak and Adilabad districts in Telangana as secondary centres of origin. Submitting documents for proof of origin, it also cited historical records like a "war fund seal (Banganapally-State Madras War Fund Seal)." A logo too is in place which features a bright yellow fruit around which the tagline says "Banganappalle Mangoes of Andhra Pradesh," with images of a man and a woman appearing to be farmers. According to an affidavit furnished in 2011 by the then Andhra Pradesh Commissioner of Horticulture, I Rani Kumudini nearly 7.68 lakh families, were involved in the production of Banaganapalle mangoes.
About 5,500 tonnes of Banganappalle variety of mangoes were being exported annually to countries like the US and UK. While the annual turnover of Banaganapalle mangoes was approximately Rs 1,461 crore, exports were to the tune of Rs 20.68 crore, she had said. GI is covered under the Intellectual Property Rights and the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. A GI tag certifies the origin of a product or produce from a particular region as the quality or other features of the product is attributable only to the place of its origin. The tag helps farmers or manufacturers as the case may be to get a better price in the market.
