MF ASSETS TO HIT Rs 100 LAKH CRORES BY 2025

Indian mutual fund industry's assets under management (AUM) are expected to touch Rs 100 lakh crore in the next 10 years on account of strong participation from retail investors. At present, the mutual fund industry has an asset base of Rs 22.36 lakh crore. "People want to make money and they have understood the fact that only way to beat the inflation is investment in equity. They are moving away from traditional investment products like gold and real estate and focusing on mutual funds. This will help in reaching the industry AUM to Rs 100 lakh crore in the next 10 years," said Mahindra AMC Managing Director and CEO Ashutosh Bishnoi.
- In 2017, the total asset base of all 42 active fund houses put together surged by an impressive 32 per cent, while it had risen by 24 per cent over the last five years.
- The industry's AUM had crossed the milestone of Rs 10 lakh crore for the first time in May 2014 and in a short span of about three-and-a-half years, the asset base shot up more than two-fold to over Rs 22 lakh crore at December-end 2017. It was at Rs 16.46 lakh crore at the end of December 2016.
- This was the fifth consecutive yearly rise in the industry AUM, after a drop in the assets base for two preceding years. The industry has been running a very ambitious investor awareness campaign, 'mutual fund sahi hai' or mutual funds are right for the investor and Bishnoi feels it may have added considerably to the growth.
- Overall, investor count is estimated to have risen by 1.7 crore to 6.5 crore, while retail investor accounts -- defined by folios in equity, ELSS and balanced categories -- alone grew by 1.4 crore to 5.3 crore.

Mahindra Unnnati Emerging Business Yojna

The new Scheme of Mahindra Mutual Fund "Mahindra Unnnati Emerging Business Yojna" was launched by Bishnoi. It will predominately invest in mid cap companies. The new fund offer (NFO) will open on January 8 and closes on January 22. "Indian economy is poised for a multi-year growth phase, with the governments focus on reforms. Investment opportunities will also emerge with formalisation of economy leading to shifting of market share from unorganised to organised sector in highly fragmented consumer segments bringing nations progress closer to every household," he said. Further, he said that Mahindra AMC, which started operations in July 2016, is aiming to become largest investment house for semi-urban and rural areas in the next 10 years. Mahindra AMC is focused on the rural and semi-urban sector.

MARKETS WILL BE ON TIGHT ROPE IN 2018

Says Experts...Puts Sensex Target 34500

Market sentiment in 2018 will be steered by Union Budget in February, Q3 corporate earnings, outcome of assembly elections in eight states, monsoon and global oil prices, say analysts. The Sensex gained 7,430.37 points, or 27.91 per cent, last year. The 30-share key index touched its lifetime high of 34,137.97 on December 27. Timely, well spread and sufficient monsoon in India will also help rural wealth and spending, having a salutary effect on consumption and GDP growth. BSE Sensex can go up close to 34,500 levels and Nifty 50 can go close to 10,800, analysts predicted. The factors that are likely to trigger market movements going ahead include the upcoming budget, possible policy changes which go towards reviving the investment cycle or any additional measures to support the rural economy and large infra project announcements. Sectors such as pharma and textiles might  perform better in 2018, they said. On the domestic front, next triggers would be corporate earnings. Post the recent state elections, all eyes are on Budget 2018-19. The next budget is expected to be focused on improving rural economy and would be an ideal opportunity for the government to set its road map for alleviating rural distress.

"Also, the other catalyst for growth would be government's focus on sectors such as clean energy, affordable housing and allied sectors"

- Payal Pandya, Research Analyst - Wealth Research, Centrum Broking Limited.

"Global oil prices, international commodity prices, global policies and interest rates if remain stable, we are likely to see positive sentiment continue. Any erratic changes in these parameters will trigger market movements going ahead,"
- Anita Gandhi, Whole Time Director, Arihant Capital Markets

"In 2018, we have Karnataka elections in March-April and three other northern states around the same time. The provisions of Budget 2018-19 due on February 1 will also influence the outcome of this election, though economic growth/reforms and job growth are already under scrutiny"

- Deepak Jasani, Head - retail research, HDFC securities

"Indian economy is on the growth track. The macros so far have been good though there has been some spurt in inflation due to food price rise, especially vegetables, which is expected to be tamed as the fresh supplies resume. A good monsoon is likely to convert into good harvest and consumption led demand leading to improved corporate earnings. As far as markets are concerned, equity markets are expected to post good returns following corporate earnings recovery over next 18 months.
- Arun Thukral, MD & CEO, Axis Securities.

"Focus on upcoming union budget and reforms will direct investors to turn sector/stock specific. Additionally, any pick-up in capacity utilisation and recovery in capex cycle will add impetus to the market. Though the outlook on main indices is moderate in the short to medium-term, we feel that the broader market will maintain its vibrancy as businesses flourish."
- Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.

NASDAQ ENDS OVER 7000 for the1st TIME

US stocks begin their new year on a strong note, with the Nasdaq closing above 7,000 mark for the first time, driven mainly by the bullish technology industry. At the closing, the technology-rich Nasdaq Composite Index had jumped 1.5 per cent to end the first session of the year at 7,006.90. According to The Wall Street Journal, it raced to 1,000 points in just eight month – a pace not seen since the height of the technology boom. Nasdaq, which mainly focusses on technology index, jumped 28 per cent in 2017 as against the Dow Industrial average of 25 per cent and S&P 500’s 19 per cent rise, it said. Riot Blockchain, a biotech-turned-blockchain company was the biggest winner in the run-up to the Nasdaq Composite’s latest milestone, the daily said. Large tech companies such as Apple, Google parent Alphabet and Microsoft have played a key role in it. Fox Business attributed this to rallying technology and consumer-discretionary stocks. According to the Wall Street Journal, earnings for technology companies have soared in 2017, but they have been unable to keep up with price gains. "The tech industry and its importance in the wider economy have changed dramatically since the last boom. In the late 1990s, investors were largely betting on the promise of the internet," it said. "Today, with the decade-old smartphone boom and advances in areas like cloud computing and artificial intelligence, technology is deeply embedded into the way people work and do business, and has transformed industries including retail and entertainment," the daily reported. Ryan Detrick, a senior market strategist at LPL Financial, said a good start to the year is usually followed by strong yearly performance.

SME 's GARNER RECORD Rs.1785 CRORES THROUGH IPOs in 2017

Spurred by investor interest, 132 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) raised a record Rs 1,785 crore through IPOs in 2017, which was more than three times the funds raised in the preceding year. Funds raised were used for business expansion plans, working capital requirements and other general corporate purposes. A total of 132 SMEs got listed with initial public offers (IPOs) worth Rs 1,785 crore last year as compared to 66 firms garnering Rs 540 crore in 2016 through the route, according to a data compiled by Pantomath Research. Besides, 2017 witnessed more fund-raising than aggregate capital garnered in past five years cumulatively. Overall, the firms had mopped up Rs 1,315 crore in last five years. Together, these 132 firms have a market capitalisation of more than Rs 30,000 crore. "The year 2017 has been pinnacle in SME capital market and we expect this trend to continue in 2018 as well," said Mahavir Lunawat Group Managing Director at Pantomath Advisory Services Group. Besides, average initial share-sale offers have shot up to Rs 13.42 crore last year from Rs 8.18 crore in 2016. The IPO chart in the year is led by Zota Healthcare that raised Rs 58.50 crore, followed by Euro India Fresh Foods Ltd, which mopped up Rs 51.26 crore. Geographically, Gujarat continued to dominate the IPO space by contributing 51 firms on SME bourses, followed by Maharashtra (39), Madhya Pradesh (11), Delhi (8), Rajasthan (6), Telangana (4), West Bengal (3) and two companies each got listed from Andhra Pradesh and Punjab. The companies which got listed during the period under review represent diverse industry base such as media and entertainment, manufacturing, textiles, engineering, finance, chemicals, agriculture, food processing and construction. "Some of the marque investors also participated in SME IPOs at pre-listing and post-listing stage. This clearly shows SME investing is gaining popularity day by day," he added. The year 2017 also reaped bumper returns to investors. Out of 132 companies listed in 2017, 39 closed at 20 per cent upper circuit limit on the first day of listing. Further, robust response from investors has been received in terms of subscriptions with five IPOs getting subscribed more than 100 times the issue size. In terms of value, top five initial share-sale offers garnered Rs 18,629 crore subscriptions from the investors. BSE and NSE launched SME platforms in March 2012, becoming the only two bourses to offer such a segment in the country. Since then, around 329 companies have got listed on these platforms. Further, SME indices outperformed broader markets in 2017. The secondary market witnessed 89 per cent growth of BSE SME index and 67 per cent surge in Nifty SME. In comparison, the broader indices - Sensex and Nifty 50 - climbed 27 per cent and 28 per cent, respectively.

MF AUM's CROSS Rs.22 TRILLION MARK

Mutual fund industry saw its assets base jump to over Rs 22 lakh crore in 2017, adding more than Rs 5.4 lakh crore to the kitty, on strong participation from retail investors and investor awareness initiatives. Moreover, fund houses are expecting similar 'healthy' growth in AUM to continue in the new year too as the penetration levels of mutual funds are still very low in the country. Total AUM of all the fund houses put together soared by over Rs 5.4 lakh crore (32 per cent) to Rs 22.35 lakh crore at the end of December 2017 from Rs 16.93 lakh crore in December-end 2016, latest update with Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) noted. Moreover, a sharp rise in systematic investment plans (SIPs) promoted more sustainable growth for the industry as more people moved away from the concept of large lump sum investments

Low penetration of mutual funds in India is one of the key factors which will drive growth, coupled with increasing levels of financial literacy and lack of suitable alternatives for long term wealth creation, a key Official of the Industry said. Further, technology is likely to be a key enabler of growth to deepen reach and build scale using the trinity of Jandhan, Aadhaar and the Mobile (JAM) for everything from KYC to payments. This will not only help improve distribution reach across the country but will also reduce costs and improves ease of investing he added.

5th Year in Row
This was the fifth consecutive yearly rise in the industry AUM, after a drop in the assets base for two preceding years. Out of the 42 active fund houses, two mutual funds have not disclosed the assets under management (AUM) data at the end of December 2017. Further, barring Taurus MF, all the fund houses have registered a rise in their respective AUMs during the period under review. The spike in bank deposits and consequent decline in interest rates following demonetisation on November 8, 2016 have helped mutual funds.

"The 'Mutual Fund Sahi Hai' campaign has created huge impact in building confidence among investors. Mutual fund distributors too have played a key role in connecting with their existing and new customers. It is also believed that investors are no more interested in buying into traditional asset classes such as real estate and gold thus moving to financial asset class,"
- A Balasubramanian, Chairman, AMFI

"Demonetisation effect, decline in interest rate on traditional assured returns product like fixed deposit, shift from physical to financial savings as real estate and gold were lack lustre and increasing initiatives on enhancing investor awareness have all aided in such impressive growth in the industry,"
- Sanjay Sapre, Franklin Templeton Investments India President

ICICI MF leader of the Industry
Among the top five players, ICICI Prudential MF led the pack with asset base of Rs 2,93,338 crore (excluding Fund of Funds) followed by HDFC MF (2,89,168 crore), Reliance MF (Rs 2,43,594 crore), Aditya Birla Sun Life MF (Rs 2,41,106 crore) and SBI MF (Rs 2,05,392 crore). In terms of yearly rise in AUM, Motilal Oswal MF saw maximum growth of 121 per cent to Rs 15,762 crore in asset base, followed by Mirae Asset MF (112 per cent to Rs 13,467 crore) L&T MF (71 per cent to Rs 60,314 crore), Axis MF (49 per cent to Rs 73,372 crore) and DSP Black Rock MF (48 per cent to Rs 86,255 crore).

STOCK MARKET WELCOME NEW YEAR WITH LOSS

Sensex drops 244 pts

A late sell-off in auto, banking and IT shares pulled back the benchmark BSE Sensex from record high level to close down by 244 points, its biggest single loss in past one month, on the first trading day of 2018. Investors preferred to book profits at record highs amid concerns over fiscal slippages and rising crude oil prices and absence of cues from global markets which were closed for the New Year holiday. The benchmark Sensex touched a low of 33,766.15 before settling lower by 244.08 points, or 0.72 per cent, at 33,812.75. This is the biggest single-day fall since December 1 when the index had lost 316.41. The 30-share index had closed at an all-time high of 34,056.83 in the last session of 2017 on Friday. Also, the 50-share Nifty cracked below the 10,500-mark to hit a low of 10,423.10 before settling 95.15 points, or 0.90 per cent down at 10,435.55. Stocks opened on a weak note and remained range-bound for the better part of the day but an intense sell-off in the last hour of the trade dragged the key indices deep down, brokers said. Bouts of buying were, however, seen in capital goods, realty, healthcare and consumer durables stocks that capped the losses to some extent.
In the Sensex kitty, TCS emerged as the top loser by falling 1.69 per cent, followed by IndusInd Bank 1.45 per cent and Hindustan Unilever 1.40 per cent.
Other big losers include HDFC Ltd, Tata Steel, ONGC, Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Asian Paint, HDFC Bank, SBI, Kotak Bank and Yes Bank, dropping by up to 1.35 per cent. Auto stocks such as Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, M&M, Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp too came under pressure and lost up to 1.35 per cent after December sales data failed to cheer investors. Maruti reported a 10 per cent rise in December sales. "Despite positive auto sales numbers, market started-off the New Year on a cautious note. Lingering concern on fiscal slippages and a sharp up-move in crude prices dampened investor sentiments. Additionally, an expectation of weak monthly manufacturing data tomorrow is adding to the cautiousness," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services Ltd, said. US oil prices had finished above USD 60 a barrel for the first time since June 2015 while Brent North Sea crude for March delivery rose to USD 66.87 a barrel on Friday. The BSE auto index fell 0.78 per cent, followed by bankex 0.75 per cent, teck 0.65 per cent, IT 0.55 per cent, metal 0.52 per cent, oil & gas 0.46 per cent, FMCG 0.29 per cent, PSU 0.15 per cent and infrastructure 0.13 per cent. The near-absence of overseas cues meant investors remained directionless, forcing to cut their positions, brokers said.
In contrast, investors indulged in widening their portfolios in the second-line stocks which outperformed the key indices. Small-cap and mid-cap indices closed with gains of 0.26 per cent and 0.08 per cent, respectively.

Rs 1.6 lakh cr raised via stock mkt routes in 2017

A total of Rs 1,61,116 crore was raised through various equity market routes in 2017, the highest ever mop-up in a calendar year, with IPOs and QIPs dominating the scene, says a report by PRIME Database. "2017 witnessed raising of Rs 1.6 lakh crore through the public equity market, 3.6 times the amount raised in the preceding year," said Pranav Haldea, Managing Director, PRIME Database. This is the highest ever amount raised in a calendar year, with the previous highest being Rs 97,746 crore in 2010. "2018 looks even more promising. On the IPO front, already at the beginning of the year, there are 15 companies holding Sebi approval wanting to raise nearly Rs 12,000 crore and another 10 firms hoping to raise nearly Rs 19,000 crore awaiting approval," said Haldea. 2017 was also the best year ever for the initial public offer (IPO) market by far at Rs 68,826 crore, the previous highest being in 2010 when Rs 37,535 crore was raised, Haldea said.
As many as 36 main-board IPOs came to the market collectively raising Rs 67,147 crore, with the largest by General Insurance Corp worth Rs 11,257 crore. The overall response from public to the mainboard IPOs of the year was also very good, the report said. While 17 IPOs received a mega response of more than 10 times, the rest 13 offers were oversubscribed between 1 and 3 times. As far as retail investors are concerned, the year witnessed a very good response from them as well. The highest number of applications was received by Cochin Shipyard at 19.42 lakh followed by HUDCO (18.74 lakh). Response to the IPOs was further buoyed by strong listing performance, Haldea added. Of the 36 IPOs which got listed, 18 gave a return of over 10 per cent, the report noted. Last year also witnessed significant activity in the SME platform. There were as many as 133 SME IPOs, the highest ever, which collected a total of Rs 1,679 crore. According to PRIME, offers for sale through stock exchanges, which is for dilution of promoters holding, saw an increase from Rs 13,066 crore raised in 2016 to Rs 19,208 crore raised last year. The largest OFS was that of NTPC in August (Rs 9,192 crore) followed by BEL in February (Rs 1,687 crore). OFS accounted for 12 per cent of the total Rs 1,61,116 crore market amount, it said. Already-listed companies found the QIP route very attractive, with 44 companies mobilising Rs 61,118 crore, the highest ever. The largest QIP of 2017 was from SBI raising Rs 15,000 crore, accounting for 25 per cent of the total QIP amount. Only two companies used the IPP route, mobilising Rs 4,668 crore. Of the total, the amount raised through fresh capital was Rs 86,176 crore (53 per cent), the remaining Rs 74,940 crore being offer for sale. The report further said 2017 was the best year ever with Rs 73,282 crore raised by the government. Public offers (IPOs of HUDCO, Cochin Shipyard, GIC, New India Assurance and OFS of MOIL, BEL, NALCO, RCFL, NFL, HCL, NTPC, NLC) constituted a lion’s share of divestment proceeds at Rs 33,418 crore. This was followed by ETFs at Rs 23,000 crore, block deals (SUUTI sales of L&T and ITC) at Rs 10,844 crore, buybacks (NHPC, NLC, OIL, EIL, Bharat Dynamics) at Rs 5,627 crore and sale of shares to employees at Rs 394 crore, it said.
