ISRO HITS CENTURY

Launches Cartosat 2 series

India today reaffirmed its space prowess and commercial launch capabilities as it successfully launched its 100th satellite along with 30 other spacecraft including weather observation Cartosat 2 series onboard the Polar rocket from Srhiarikota Space Centre. This was PSLV's longest-ever mission. With the successful launch, including 28 satellites from foreign countries, by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), ISRO put behind a rare failure it encountered four months ago. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had suffered a setback after the failure of the earlier PSLV-C39 mission in August last year.
The previous mission to launch backup navigation satellite IRNSS-1H on board PSLV-C39 had failed after the heat shield did not separate in the final leg of the launch sequence, with the satellite getting stuck in the fourth stage of the rocket. Today's mission marked a milestone in ISRO's annals with a micro satellite, among the three Indian spacecraft launched, becoming the 100th to roll out through ISRO Satellite Centre Complex (ISAC). The 28 international customer satellites were launched as part of the commercial arrangements between ISRO and its commercial arm Antrix Corporation Ltd. The co-passenger satellites include three micro and 25 nano-satellites from six countries -- Canada, Finland, France, Korea, the United Kingdom and US.

- Besides ISRO's communication, weather observation, navigation and experimental spacecraft, the 100 satellites included nano and micro spacecraft made by educational institutions in the country. Basically...the 100 satellites covers all student satellites also that have been put (by ISRO). Earlier, in a precise launch, PSLV-C40 lifted off at 9.28 am at the end of the 28-hour countdown from the first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here, about 110 km from Chennai, and soared into a cloudy sky.

- After a perfect flight sequence, each of which was applauded by ISRO scientists, the four-stage rocket first injected the 710-kg Cartosat-2 Series Satellite for earth observation into 505-km polar sun synchronous orbit about 17 minutes after lift off. India's nano satellite and 28 payloads from six countries, including the U.S and the U.K, totally weighing 613 kg were then released into orbit one by one in a space of about seven minutes.

- In a multi-orbit manoeuvre, micro satellite built by ISRO was placed in the orbit finally after the PSLV-C40 was brought down to 359.584 kms in polar Sun synchronous orbit by twice re-starting the fourth stage of the rocket, about 105 minutes after lift-off. The fourth stage was finally shut off at about 2 hours 21 minutes, thus making the mission the longest ever by ISRO.

- A similar kind of process was taken up during the launch of SCATSAT-1 on-board PSLV-C35 in September 2016 in which the fourth stage engine was restarted and later cut off for launching the satellite. This mission had lasted two hours and 15 minutes.

- Cartosat-2 Series is an advanced remote sensing satellite similar in configuration to earlier six spacecraft in the series and intended to augment data services to the users. Its primary objective is to provide high resolution scene specific spot imageries that would help in urban and rural applications, coastal land use and regulation, road network monitoring, water distribution and geographical information system applications among others. According to ISRO, the Cartosat-2 series satellite carries panchromatic and multi-spectral cameras operating in Time Delay Integration mode and is capable of delivering high resolution data.

Chandrayaan-2 mission on schedule: ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation today said the Chandrayaan-2 mission is on schedule and flight models are going through various tests. In Chandrayan-2, the country's second mission to the Moon, ISRO is planning to rover to explore the lunar surface.
"It is on schedule. We have to find out whether it is in March or not," ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar told reporters. Speaking after the successful orbiting of 31 satellites, including weather observation Cartosat-2 Series craft, by the PSLV-C40, he said the Chandrayan-II satellite was getting ready at the ISRO Satellite Centre. The flight models were going through various levels of tests, he added. It would comprise an orbiter, lander and six-wheeled rover which would move around the landing site and instruments on it would send back data that would be useful in analysing the lunar soil. After reaching the lunar orbit, the Lander housing the rover will separate from the orbiter. After a controlled descent, the lander will soft land on the lunar surface at a specified site and deploy the rover.

"The launch of the 100th satellite by @isro signifies both its glorious achievements, and also the bright future of India's space programme".

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi

"ISRO is starting 2018 with the successful launch... all satellites have been released. So far Cartosat performance is satisfactory. Happy to provide Cartosat 2 Series as a New Year gift for the country."

- A S Kiran Kumar, ISRO Chairman

NO MAJOR & PROLONGED CORRECTION IN INDIAN EQUITIES

Predicts Credit Suisse

Global brokerage Credit Suisse is "cautiously optimistic" on Indian equities but added that it does not expect any major and prolonged correction in the stocks this year. Though it is enthused by the reform momentum in the country, the fiscal crunch, several state elections, earning downgrades and high valuations make it "nervous", it said. The report authored by Jitendra Gohil, Head of India Equity Research at Credit Suisse. Any sharp and prolonged correction in Indian equities is ruled out owing to robust domestic flows and a solid global growth outlook. "The ongoing reforms have not only put India on the top of investors' radar but also lifted India's long-term growth potential, in our view," it said. The report further noted that considering a benign outlook for investments in gold and real estate, coupled with changing investments and spending patterns of the millennials, equity mutual fund flows are expected to remain elevated. Within equities, Credit Suisse remained 'overweight' on consumption-related stocks, especially discretionary items with a rural focus and the energy sector, given a firm oil price environment and favourable government policies to support the sector. "Amid high valuations and a volatile macro environment, we recommend investors to focus on long-term structural themes that have been shaping up in India," it said. The report said while the recent reform initiatives like GST and demonetisation could potentially push India's GDP growth structurally on the higher path, the drag from these reforms, although fading, is here to stay for some more time. Around 45 per cent of India's GDP and 85-90 per cent of employment come from the unorganised plus agriculture sectors, which are under severe distress and will recover gradually, leading to below potential growth in 2018, it added.

Indices set Another Record

Benchmarks ended at record highs for the second straight session today as investors remained hopeful of upbeat corporate earnings despite lacklustre numbers from TCS. The BSE Sensex gained 88.90 points to end at 34,592.39, while the broader NSE Nifty finished at 10,681.25, up 30.05 points. The indices suffered a bout of volatility mid-session following an unprecedented press conference by four senior judges of the Supreme Court where they mounted a virtual revolt against the chief justice and listed a litany of problems afflicting the country's highest court. However, buying momentum resumed soon, which propelled the markets to record levels. After opening on a strong footing, the Sensex advanced to hit a fresh lifetime high of 34,638.42 on the back of continued buying by domestic funds and retail investors but later declined to 34,342.16. It finally settled 88.90 points, or 0.26 per cent higher at 34,592.39, breaking its previous record closing of 34,503.49 hit in yesterday's trade. The broader Nifty, after scaling an all-time high (intra-day) of 10,690.40 points, finished at 10,681.25, up 30.05 points, or 0.28 per cent.
- This was the sixth weekly gain in a row for the benchmarks. During the week, the Sensex gained 438.54 points, or 1.28 per cent, while the Nifty rose 122.40 points, or 1.15 per cent.
- Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities to the tune of Rs 770.02 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 623.63 crore on net basis yesterday, provisional data showed.

NIFTY EARNINGS FLAT IN 2018

UBS Cautious Note

Projecting zero returns from the Nifty, Swiss brokerage UBS has projected a 10 per cent cut in its index target at 10,500 for calendar 2018, even as it remains positive over the long-term. "Top-down, we forecast Nifty earnings growth will recover from 9 per cent in fiscal 2018 to 13 per cent in 2019, but driven largely by financials," the brokerage said in a report. "However, earnings growth is likely to disappoint against consensus forecast of 22 per cent growth for fiscal 2019, implying a 10 per cent cut," it added. Accordingly, the brokerage estimates "no returns from the Nifty in 2018" and has set the index target at 10,500 for this December. The report noted that a sharp earnings recovery, with continued robust macro stability appears priced in by the markets. "A sharp earnings recovery appears priced in. The markets are already close to our 2018 target, given optimistic fiscal 2019 consensus earnings expectations, which build in a strong growth recovery," the report said, adding "alternately, if we factor in realistic growth, the markets are trading at 2-year forward earnings". The brokerage major also noted that despite its "muted market view", the country remains a stock picker's market, more so in this calendar year. "We are overweight private banks, property, oil and gas, telecom, IT services, and auto parts," it said adding it is underweight on cement and industrials/infrastructure. UBS' view on the markets is contrary to other global and domestic brokerages. Deutsche bank has estimated the benchmark index to hit 11,500 levels, while Kotak Securities also sees Nifty at 11,600 by December on back of strong economic and earnings recovery. The benchmark 50-stock index today closed at fresh high of 10,637.

Stocks close at record high for third day

The benchmark BSE Sensex built on gains to close at record high for a third straight session today riding on smart jump in Coal India, Reliance Industries and ITC amid positive leads from global markets. Extending the record run for third day, the 30-share Sensex closed at fresh life high of 34,443.19, eking out gains of 90.40 points, after a choppy trade. The wide-based Nifty of NSE also settled at record high of 10,637, 13.40 points. Opening higher, the Sensex quickly rallied to an all-time intra-day high of 34,488.03. Profit booking in some pharma, capital goods and telecom stocks at record levels, however, pulled the index to a low of 34,343.41 before close. The index has risen by 559.41 points in the previous three straight sessions. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have been supporting the ongoing rally by pumping in sizeable capital, brokers said.

Caution prevailed as crude prices surged to the highest level since 2015. "With indices hitting record peaks on successive days, caution dominated the day's proceedings, especially with midcaps pulling back from day’s peaks. Investors are likely to remain focused on stock specific moves eyeing the prospects of earnings season and mixing and matching various elements of the upcoming union budget."
- Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Financial Services

"Sustained foreign inflows and optimism ahead of October-December 2017 earnings and the Union Budget 2018 aided gains."

- Karthikraj Lakshmanan, Senior Fund Manager – Equities,
BNP Paribas Mutual Fund.

- Coal India was the biggest gainer on both Sensex and Nifty components after its board approved a hike in prices of non-coking coal for power and non-power sectors with immediate effect. Coal India rose 5.76 per cent on NSE and 5.63 per cent on BSE, followed by Yes Bank 2.31 per cent.
- Other prominent gainers were Wipro, ITC Ltd, Reliance Industries, Asian Paint, Tata Motors, Infosys, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank and M&M, surging by up to 2.11 per cent. In contrast, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, Hero MotoCorp, Sun Pharma, NTPC, Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki, ICICI Bank, SBI, Hind Unilever, L&T, Dr Reddy's, Power Grid, HDFC Ltd, TCS, ONGC and Axis Bank fell by up to 1.18 per cent largely on profit-booking and squeezed the rise in the key indices.
