The
average assets under management (AAUM) of the mutual fund industry
comprising 44 players grew by 26.4 per cent during the third quarter
to Rs 16.93 trillion from Rs 13.41 trillion a year ago. The data show
that a total AAUM of Rs 16.93 trillion during the third quarter,
adding Rs 3.52 trillion over the year-ago period. In percentage
terms, this is a 26.4 per cent growth, according to the data from the
industry body Amfi. Significantly, amongst the top five mutual fund
houses, HDFC Mutual Fund and Reliance Mutual Fund lost their market
share to 13.10 per cent and 11.57, respectively in the reporting
period from 13.32 per cent and 12.23 per cent respectively a year
ago. The rest 29 fund houses collectively registered relatively
slower growth at 19.4 per cent and also lost collective market share
to 9.55 per cent in the reporting period from 10.18 per cent a year
ago. As per the Amfi data, among the top 15 players, the growth was
led by DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund clipping at over 53.25 per cent,
making it the fastest growing MF in the reporting period, taking its
AUM to Rs 58,357.11 crore. This also helped DSP BlackRock MF to move
up the ranking to the nine-nth position, overtaking IDFC Mutual Fund
which grew at just about 6 per cent. Commenting on the achievement,
the company's executive vice president Aditi Kothari Desai said "both
equity and fixed income teams have performed well for us." This
was followed by Kotak Mutual Fund growing by 49.6 per cent, Axis
Mutual Fund (42.9), SBI Mutual Fund (40.9), ICICI Prudential Mutual
Fund (32.4), Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund (32.4) and HDFC Mutual Fund
grew by 24.4 per cent. Interestingly, in March SBI MF had surpassed
UTI MF to become the fifth largest player in terms of AUM. "The
Q3 data of the industry shows that liquidity is there in the market
and people find mutual fund as good investment," SBI MF
executive director and chief marketing officer DP Singh told PTI. "We
are looking at achieving an AUM of Rs 1.5 trillion from Rs 1.4
trillion at present by the fiscal-end," he added.

NOW IT IS THE TURN OF POUND
433
million coins in UK about to become worthless
British
people are hoarding around 433 million pounds in the old style coins
in piggy banks, car ashtrays and down the back of sofas and
armchairs, experts say as the Treasury prepares to phase them out
this year. The old coin has been a favourite of savers since it was
introduced in 1983. But it is set to be replaced by the new 12-sided
1 pound coin in March and the round pound will cease to be legal
tender by October 15. The Sun reports that the government estimates
that 1.3 billion pounds worth of coins are stashed away around a
third — or 433 million pounds — of which are pound coins.
Yesterday the final design for the 12-sided coin was unveiled and
ministers warned the old one would become worthless, it said. The new
design is made of two metals, with a gold- coloured outer ring and a
silver-coloured inner ring. It has a '£' symbol that changes to to
the number '1' when the coin is seen from different angles and is
thinner and lighter than the current coin. The currency change was
announced in the 2014 Budget. Chief Secretary to the Treasury David
Gauke said: "March 28 should be an important date in everybody's
calendar this year – as we will have a new quid on the block. "This
is a historic moment as it's the first time we've introduced a new 1
pound coin since 1983, and this one will be harder to counterfeit
than ever before. "Our message is clear: if you have a round one
pound coin sitting at home or in your wallet, you need to spend it or
return it to your bank before October 15." After the
introduction in March there will be a transition period when vending
machines may only accept old coins. Helen Dickinson, CEO of the
British Retail Consortium (BRC), said: "Through the British
Retail Consortium, most major UK retailers have been engaged in
discussions and planning with the Royal Mint and Her Majesty’s
Treasury since the March 2014 announcement that a new pound coin
would be introduced in 2017.
PAY ONLINE for LPG, GET Rs.5 DISCOUNT
After
petrol and diesel, buying and paying for cooking gas (LPG) online
will get consumers a discount of Rs 5 per cylinder.
State-owned fuel retailers, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) will offer "an upfront discount of Rs 5 on every LPG refill to all LPG customers who will book and pay for it online," an official statement said here.
To provide cash-less transactions, the government had asked oil companies to pay consumers 0.75 per cent discount on cashless fuelling of petrol and diesel at petrol pumps.
This has now been extended to cooking gas (LPG).
"Customers can make payment through existing online modes i.e net banking, credit and debit cards at the time of web- booking their refills," the statement said.
On doing so, customers will get the discounted amount displayed on their screens. This net amount payable will be retail selling price minus incentive amount of Rs 5 per cylinder.
"The net discounted amount will also be shown on the cash memo accompanying the home-delivery of the LPG cylinder," it said.
A subsidised LPG cylinder of 14.2-kg currently costs Rs 434.71 in Delhi. A non-subsidised bottle of similar size, which consumer not having a subsidised connection buy, costs Rs 585. Even for the subsidised users, non-subsidised LPG cylinder is also they have to buy after exhausting their quota of 12 bottles at sub-market rates.
The oil firms offer a 0.75 per cent discount on the price of petrol and diesel to consumers paying by cards or mobile wallets to push people towards digital payments in the face of a severe cash crunch brought in by the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
Such discount is credited to customer's account by way of 'cash back' within maximum three working days.
Petrol currently costs Rs 70.60 a litre in Delhi and the discount translates into 53 paisa. Similarly, on the price of Rs 57.82 for diesel, the discount comes to 43 paisa per litre.
Stating that the discounts are aimed to encourage consumers to increasingly shift to digital payment modes to achieve the objective of no-cash or less-cash based transactions, the statement said, "The incentive will encourage more and more LPG consumers to go for cashless mode transactions."

IPOs NEW CASH COWS
The
primary market has emerged as the 'cash cow' for investors in 2016,
amid high volatility in the secondary market, as 70 per cent of new
entrants are trading well above their issue price, giving investors
returns of up to two times. Out of 26 companies that came out with
IPOs in 2016, 18 have registered smart gains, ranging 2-170 per cent
against the price at which they had issued shares to investors and
the rest eight firms have however failed to attract investors and are
quoting below their issue price. These 18 companies have rewarded
investors with returns in the range of 2-170 per cent, with three of
them hitting it over 100 per cent till date, an analysis of the stock
performance of the newly-listed firms showed. Infibeam Incorporation,
which made its stock market debut in April, has seen the steepest
rally in its share price and is trading 170 per cent higher than the
IPO price. The public offers of Advanced Enzymes and Quess Corp have
given smart returns to their investors, soaring about 122 per cent
and 107 per cent, respectively. Besides, Mahanagar Gas, Bharat Wire
Rope and Thyrocare Technologies have jumped 86 per cent, 66 per cent
and 55 per cent, respectively, against the issue price. According to
Samco Securities Chief Executive Jimeet Modi, the price band of the
offers is the key driver in the success of issues in 2016. In stark
contrast, eight companies -- Varun Beverages, ICICI Prudential Life
Insurance Company, L&T Technology Services, L&T Infotech,
Quickheal Technologies, Precision Camshafts, HPL Electric and Power
and GNA Axles -- have failed to stay afloat. HPL Electric and Power,
which listed in October this year, has seen its shares plummet by 52
per cent. Quickheal Technologies, which made its debut in February
this year, has seen its shares fall by 22 per cent. The BSE's
benchmark Sensex, which has seen a highly volatile trend, gained 1.95
per cent at 26,626.46 points this year. In 2016, 26 companies have
collectively raised over Rs 26,000 crore through their respective
IPOs, making it the best one for public offers since 2010. "IPO
market has seen some good action. Some of the key drivers that gave
this boost to IPOs can be attributed to the business-friendly
government, rising middle class income and a regulated capital
market," ICICI Securities Head Equity Capital Market Pranjal
Srivastava said. "Further, the introduction of concept of
foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) also boosted the foreign investor
sentiment and helped tap foreign markets. Nevertheless, the
performance of the Indian capital market in spite of some macro
global economic events that distracted attention of FPIs can also be
given credit for the rise in activity," he added.
INDIA TRUMPED BRITIAN IN 2016
It
is no mean achievement when Indian economy flexed its muscles in 2016
and briefly nosed ahead of Britain -- its once colonial master. But
the honour was fleeting as India quickly fell back to the
sixth-largest position, with considerable headwinds from
demonetisation and delay in GST rollout queering the pitch.
At the start of 2016, everything looked hunky-dory as the country took pride in being the world's fastest-growing major economy, but the momentum seemed to have petered out by the end of the year as spending took a hit and industrial activity faltered with the junking of 86 per cent of currency in circulation, leading to an across-the-board downgrade in growth projections.
The first half saw India being called the bright spot – and rightly so -- in a world searching for growth engine. The government moved in to reconfigure its economic architecture through new institutional mechanisms – like the one to tackle monetary policy. But Brexit, protectionist signal from Donald Trump fresh from the surprise US presidential election win, the Syrian turmoil and an uptick in oil prices partly reversed some of the gains and capped 2016 as a tumultuous year. The economic agenda for 2017 remain clear. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley needs to impart a big push to the economic activity in the budget – coming up in a month -- through not just raising spending on socio-economic infrastructure but dealing with the fallout of the cash recall exercise. The need of the hour is a 'feel-good’ budget that will give people something to look forward to while taking the reforms agenda to the logical conclusion, including a schedule for the landmark GST launch that can be honoured. Once expected to overtake the UK GDP in 2020, the moment arrived early enough in mid-December on the back of a near 20 per cent drop in the value of the pound after the shock Brexit vote. This squeezed UK's 2016 GDP to 1.87 trillion pound (USD 2.29 trillion) as against India’s USD 2.3 trillion (Rs 153 lakh crore). But the change of fortunes came when forex rates realigned and the UK economy stood at USD 2.3 trillion compared with USD 2.25 trillion of Indian economy as the year drew to a close. The jury is still out as India is expected to bridge the gap in the new year even if it were to grow at a lower pace of 7 per cent and UK’s growth is projected at no more than 2 per cent through 2020.

Although
economists are wary of comparing the relative size of economies using
the volatile market exchange rates and prefer purchasing power parity
instead, which adjusts the differences in local purchasing power,
India's fifth spot behind the US, China, Japan and Germany speaks
volumes. The single-biggest spoiler was the cash ban, which has
triggered fears of a blow to consumption, particularly in rural
areas, with the dominant services sector being the worst hit. Also,
industrial output and investment may feel the pinch which coupled
with job losses and a drop in demand could add to the disruption.
Demonetisation also acted as a speed breaker in the planned take-off
of the Goods and Services Tax, the biggest piece of reform since
Independence, from April 1. States that saw their revenues being
affected by demonetisation have stalled a consensus on supplementary
legislations, and the April 1 schedule looks a tall order now. But to
give credit where it is due -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
Finance Minister Jaitley -- there was never a moment that saw
commitment to reforms slipping. After cleaning up the economic mess
left by the previous UPA government, the Modi government has bitten
the bullet and started carrying out tough structural and deeper
reforms.
Despite this, private investments are still hard to come by in a big way and loans to corporate remained subdued throughout the year.
Gross domestic product, by some estimates, has slowed to 6.5 per cent in the third quarter, from 7.3 per cent in July-September.
The government is confident that these are only short-term blips, and in the long run, India is well poised to hop on to the higher growth trajectory.
While the economy grew by 7.2 per cent in the first half of the current fiscal, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) downgraded projections for 2016-17 to 7.1 per cent, from the previous 7.6 per cent. Fitch too lowered it to 6.9 per cent from 7.4 per cent while S&P had slashed its projections of 7.9 per cent to 6.9 per cent even before the November 8 demonetisation announcement.

While
inflation was in check and trade and capital flows remained largely
unaffected, exports - often seen as the engine for growth - have been
tepid. Public investment has been robust, but private investment is
yet to pick up. Industrial activity has been weakened by
demonetisation, which has taken a toll on consumption demand, the
mainstay of the economy. From the biggest change in RBI's
eight-decade history by adopting an inflation-targeting framework and
moving to a collective interest-rate decision making to overhauling
of the century-old bankruptcy law to concerted efforts to make India
a 'one nation and one market' through GST, the transformation has
been complete that laid the pitch for long-term structural benefits.
The new bankruptcy code will allow quick closure of businesses gone
bad and prevent build-up of NPAs, which are already are at a 16-year
high of 12 per cent. As the reforms momentum picked up, India
overtook the UK economy in absolute terms in mid-December though it
is still less than one-fifth of the UK in per capita terms. Though
the glory was short-lived, it did highlight India's arrival on the
global stage as an economic powerhouse that one can afford to ignore
at its own peril. More importantly, it has been able to shed any
residual notion of colonial inferiority. This is reflected in getting
tax havens like Mauritius, Cyprus and now Singapore to redraw tax
avoidance treaties with India, which is also negotiating a trade deal
with the UK, post Brexit. The way government handles the after-effect
of demonetisation and the all-crucial Budget will now shape the
